Daily Denture Cleaning Tips
Most people don't think they'll need dentures, but the reality is, nearly one in four Canadians will need either partial or full dentures at some point in their life and new research by Leger Marketing reveals that many Canadian boomers are in the dark about denture care. According to the poll, one in four Canadians boomers mistakenly believes that the best way to clean dentures is to brush them with toothpaste, and nearly a third of respondents mistakenly believe that toothpaste works as well to clean dentures as specialty denture cleaners.
To clear up some of these questions, we've asked a dentist, Dr. Carol Waldman, for some answers.
Q. Can I clean my dentures the same way I cleaned my real teeth?
A. Simply stated, dentures are not teeth. While teeth have a protective enamel, dentures are made from porcelain or acrylic, which are both porous materials. Caring for dentures has to be different than caring for teeth.
We've spent our lives adopting the habit of brushing with toothpaste morning and night, but it's now time to learn new habits with your new pearly whites. Toothpaste, which is ideal for teeth, is not recommended for dentures. Toothpaste contains abrasives which may be harmful to dentures by creating micro-scratches that can give bacteria a place to settle and multiply quickly.
Your best bet is to soak dentures in a specialty denture cleaner such as Polident. The effervescent tablets kill odour-causing bacteria, leave your dentures feeling fresh, and are safe on dentures. Soaking will also mitigate bad breath. However, don't forget about the important 'act' of brushing: brushing dentures with a soft toothbrush dipped in the cleaner solution helps remove the tougher stains.
I also recommend my patients remove dentures and soak them overnight in a specialty denture cleaner like the overnight Polident solution. Not only will the dentures be cleaned for longer, but the gums will have a chance to breathe and recover from the day's wear. Healthy gums will not only lead to a healthier mouth and a better denture fit, they also play a part in overall health.

Can you leave a partial in the cleaning solution overnight?
I recently got a partial for my upper jaw. I don't know if I can leave it in the Polident partial cleansing solution overnight. Does anyone know if I can?
Yes you can.
As long as there is no chlorine in the solution, its ok...
A chlorine (Javex) would make the metal rust.
In the polident especially made for partial dentures, the solution is chlorine free.
