In the city that strives to "Keep Portland Weird"- The Wizard of Wine reigns supreme

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In the city that strives to "Keep Portland Weird"- The Wizard of Wine reigns supreme.

Portland, Oregon, April 20, 2011

Most days, you will catch Wayne Oppenheimer in his wine store wearing khakis and a bowling shirt. His theory on wine is that it is nothing more than "geography in a bottle", and he has a rather laid back approach to wines, the Portland foodie scene, and life itself. But on the weekends, Wayne dons a heliotrope velvet wizard costume, paints his nails deep violet, and becomes the "Wizard of Wine";  a character immortalized on the web on his own WineUpTV.com site. One look at his energetic videos and you understand that this is a man who is living his passions in Technicolor. Purple Technicolor.

Born and raised in Beaverton, Oppenheimer left Oregon in 1995 for Napa Valley. He worked at Mondavi for a while and then opened a tour business, a wine club and a bottle shop. Now back in Portland, Oppenheimer brings his knowledge of wine, and pairs it with the passionate laissez-faire of the Pacific Northwest. And, not surprisingly, he's struck a chord with wine lovers and wineries alike.

"I'm just a little guy, but I love what I do. Our viewership is increasing, and wineries are taking notice. The relationships I have with these wine makers are second to none."

Byron Dooley, Owner of 7 of Hearts Wine and Luminous Hills remarks on Wayne's infectious gregarious character;

"The wine industry can be a little on the serious side, not that wine doesn't warrant it, but wine is about fun, it's about people....Wayne really does bring an energy  to the  experience, and that is a real plus."

But to the Wizard of Wine, it's all about his passion for purple;

"Oregon has become an alcohol paradise. We have great water, great soil, great hops, great grapes, and when it all comes together, it's really a beautiful thing."

Oppenheimer is a self-described West Coast wine specialist, and his shop carries hundreds of wines, most of which have no bar code. He carries everything from an $8 bottle of Columbia Crest, to a bottle that retails for over $100 from Archery Summit Arcus Estate. And, just to show that he has a sense of humor, you can pick up a bottle of Night Train. There is just nothing pretentious about this guy.

Wayne hosts a weekly show on  WineUpTV.com. He give tours through his agreatoregonwinetour.com site, and he has just launched a wine club, killerwineclub.com.
